More than 3,000 people have been displaced following heavy rains that resulted to floods in Tana River County.
Kenya Red Cross co-ordinator Jarred Bombey said a number of villages in Tana North were washed away by the floods after River Tana broke its banks and barriers.
Mr. Bombey said that about 134 families in Mathengeni area, Tana North, had moved to Garissa after what was said to be fear of being carried away by the floods.
Mr. Bombey also mentioned Bakuyu and Boka, where about 700 families were said to be affected by the floods.
Some families had taken precautionary measures by moving from the affected areas after they were given alerts by Kenya Red Cross. They were families in Kiembeni, Shaurimoyo and Huruma villages.
Mr. Bombey said the affected families were being given the basic requirements from their camps.
"We have supplied the affected families with family kits where most of them are camping and we hope we shall be able to provide them with the required resources,” said Bombey.
Mr. Oning'oi Ole Sossio, the Tana River County Commissioner, has urged residents to evacuate from areas near the river banks.
"Many people moved closer to the river banks to farm following the prolonged drought, now the river has just reclaimed its space,” said the County Commissioner.
