Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has called for immediate arrest and prosecution of politicians and businessmen linked to the imported contraband sugar that is said to have laces of mercury and copper.

Kuria says that anyone involved in the importation of contraband sugar and other products belongs to jail.

Speaking to journalists in Kiamwangi trading center in  Gatundu on Monday, the Jubilee MP asked investigative and prosecuting agencies to crack the whip on suspects linked to the illegal importation.

He said that the country is staring at health crisis if greedy people allegedly importing poisonous products are not dealt with.

“The government investigative agencies must move with speed and take stern action against people importing contraband sugar,” he said.

The MP further wants licenses of supermarkets and other retail chains selling contraband sugar and products to be canceled.

“We cannot allow rogue people to ruin our economy by satisfying their selfish needs at the expense of Kenyans health,” the MP said.

Kuria also proposed stiffer importation laws to curb greedy people from importing contraband products.

The Gatundu South MP asked Kenyans to be careful on what they consume following massive exposes of contraband products.

Reports of contraband products in the Kenyan market are rife as the government moves to tame the unscrupulous traders and businessmen behind it.

In the last one week,   police have discovered thousands of bags of contraband sugar and other products including cooking oil in some parts of the country.

Last week, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said that the government will act tough on people behind the contraband products.

The CS said that the contraband sugar recovered in some parts of the country contains mercury and copper which are harmful to human health.

Last week, Dagorreti North MP Simba Arati claimed that the contraband sugar being discovered across the country belongs to certain politicians.

The ODM MP asked the government to speedily investigate the matter threatening to expose the politicians behind it if they fail to present themselves to the police.
