Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has been ordered by the High Court on Wednesday to pay Martha Karua Sh6.5 million for defamation.

Karua had moved to court suing Kuria for damaging her reputation after the Gatundu MP claimed that she procured witnesses in the case against Deputy President William Ruto at the Hague.

She told the court that the claims are scandalous, malicious, unwarranted and lowered her dignity among right-thinking members of the society as well as her standing as a politician, businesswoman, family woman and an advocate.

Karua in her suit papers was demanding Sh20 million from Kuria in damages for defamation but Justice Joseph Sergon said Sh6.5 million was sufficient.

Kuria was being accused of making the claims during a rally in Kapsokwony in Bungoma County on September 21, 2015.

The MP claimed that he met with Karua and other leaders at Galileo in Westlands area to scheme on how to recruit fake witnesses to testify against Ruto.

Karua told the court that she issued a demand letter the same day asking the MP to withdraw and apologise but Mr Kuria failed to do so and he made the same remarks at Parliament Buildings.

Ruto and President Uhuru Kenyatta faced crimes against humanity following the 2007-2008 post-election violence, but the case was dismissed in April 2016 for lack of sufficient evidence.
