The ODM leader has been relentlessly advocating for the change of the constitution to create a parliamentary system of governance and also introduce 14 regional blocks to the current 47 devolved units and national government.

Deputy President William Ruto has come out to oppose the referendum call on grounds it would be costly and unnecessary.

But Kuria has rallied behind Raila's push but on one condition: The referendum should not be held within the next four years.

Speaking to a local daily, the outspoken legislator said the exercise needs to be conducted in 2022 alongside the next general election, noting it would help avoid unnecessary politicking and save the taxpayers' money.

"Since we agree this (referendum debate) is not about the succession politics, I am supporting the referendum on condition that it is held on the second Tuesday of August 2022 so that we do not subject the country to a continous campaign mode.

Let's go to the polls, to elect a president, governor, senator, Women Rep, MP, MCA and also vote for a referendum question," he said on Wednesday.
