Gatundu South constituency Member of Parliament Moses Kuria wants the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to extend the ongoing voter registration exercise to enable more Kenyans register as voters.
Speaking at Kirembu village in Gatundu South on Wednesday, Kuria said with the low turnout for the voter registration it will be important for IEBC to extend the period.
The MP said that the 30 day exercise should be extended to enable people who have not registered to do so.
Kuria noted that many eligible youth who have not received their national Identification Card (IDs) are likely to be locked out of the exercise.
“The IEBC should consider extending the ongoing voter registration exercises so that people who have not registered can get a chance to register as voters,” said the lawmaker.
Kuria appealed to residents to massively come out and register as voters in readiness for the 2017 elections.
Meanwhile the MP wants the IEBC to take action against politicians who are allegedly moving voters from one region to another.
He alleged that some politicians were transferring voters from one area to another a move he said contravenes the electoral laws.
At the same time, the vocal Gatundu South MP condemned the violence that was experienced in Kariobangi area in Nairobi last Sunday.
He asked the police to investigate the violence and take action against the culprits involved.
The MP said such violence related to elections cost the country in 2007 and that it should not be tolerated.
Three people were seriously injured and two motorbikes torched in Kariobangi as Cord and Jubilee supporters clashed over voter registration.
The supporter’s were accusing each other of allegedly transferring voters to the area for registration.
IEBC condemned the incident and vowed to take action against politicians contravening electoral laws.
