Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria’s latest remarks on the National Youth Service (NYS) scandal has elicited mixed reactions among a section of Kenyans on social media.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, Kuria called for the disbandment of NYS, adding that the government should divert the money allocated to NYS to the Technical Training Institutes (TTIs) in the 290 constituencies in the country. The MP further stated that if the country “must have corruption at NYS let’s have 290 devolved units of corruption”.“We have 60 constituencies with Technical Training Institutes. Another 70 in progress and 85 starting in Financial Year 2018-2019 leaving only 75 constituencies without TTI's by June 2019. My idea- divert the Sh16 Billion from NYS and complete TTIs in all 290 constituencies then make each TTI an NYS in every constituency. Then disband NYS. As for installed capacity in NYS get a Public Private Partnership Partner (PPP) to convert it into a national engineering company to undertake public projects. If we must have corruption at NYS lets have 290 devolved units of corruption,” posted the MP.Here are some of the reactions by Kenyans:"Why can't you table that in parliament where MPs can support it if you mean your words Kuria. Kenyans are tired of the blame game," Hon Shillo said."Be kind to inform us where your share is. Is it NCPB, NYS, KPLC, KPC, a new one yet to be uncovered? That is where our ears are currently focused on," Victor Migwi said."I don't agree. Instead, we should carry out a public execution of corrupt politicians. If every time corruption happens we disband an institution, then we'll have to disband the entire ministries, if only that would bring back the stolen cash..," Irungu Franco noted."A good idea but you should know NYS is not a bad idea, it’s the only institution offering free training to the youth. Before your government came into power, NYS was very well managed," Mesh Shack commented."You should be tabling these in Parliament mhesh...Here on Facebook tutasoma na tu comment but inaishia hapo... You have so many brilliant ideas but you are raising them in the wrong platform brother," Vicky Maina said.“No.....no....no...mhesh, that's not how you build strong institutions, strengthen NYS as is, making police and military uniforms is already a big step into an industrial complex, just simply solve administrative issues, otherwise you may have to disband all the parastatals in Kenya,” posted Ruthuku Kihara.“Ukiona Mheshimiwa hajalala hadi saa hii just contemplating on these mega loots then kimeumana. Good idea but take it to the floor of the house,” said Joash Omari.
