Hundreds of residents of Mosobeti township in West Mugirango constituency have accused the government of permitting a local construction company to demolish a number of their houses to pave way for construction.

On Wednesday, angry residents threatened to attack the contractors from H-Young Company following their attempted move to demolish a number of houses without being given an official notification.

According to them, most of the houses under controversy should be spared till a court case challenging the demolition is heard in Kisii.

“We have never opposed construction of roads because it benefits the locals. However, it is quite absurd that the contractors are busy making their way here to demolish our property without waiting for the outcome of the court case we had filed on December 2014 in Kisii law courts,” said Mr James Mong’are.

They urged the government to immediately intervene before the situation escalated besides urging contractors of Metamaywa-Kebirigo road to obey the rule of law.

“The government should come out clearly and respect the rule of law. This is a law abiding citizen and our rights ought to be respected irrespective of where we come from,” added Mr Chris Mogaka.

However, Mr Jahid Makhtar of the H-Young company defended the company from the accusations and said they had not been served with the notice.

“The problem here is that we were not served with the court order. It is the government of Kenya that was served but we will stop the exercise although we call for an expeditious conclusion,” he said.
