At least 10 people from Mosobeti market and its environs will lose their houses following an order from Nyamira law courts to demolish the settlements following a successful application by a private developer.

This comes after a two-year court battle in which Mr Peter Nyamosi, the private developer claimed the ownership of the land before taking the matter to court.

But on Wednesday, the order that was issued last week brought confusion and major controversy with the victims hiring youths who shielded the demolition.

“We have stayed in this land for many years and we have families here. We were not asked by the court to produce our documents and the developer never served us with the court order in the first place. This is quite unfair and that is why we have decided to protect our property,” said Mr. Micah Maeche on behalf of the victims.

However, Nyamosi urged the victims to respect the court order since they had allegedly refused to be served with the order besides issuing threats.

“I have no problem at all but the court order ought to be respected. I tried to serve them but the y kept issuing threats. They have no option other than vacating. Respecting the rule of law is mandatory and no one should dare to violate it,” he said.

But the victims vowed to push for their rights using all avenues and hinted the possible collaboration with human rights groups.
