Most of the buildings in Kisumu County lack fire extinguishers, which makes them susceptible in case of a fire outbreak, experts have said.
Investors in the building industry have been challenged to purchase fire extinguishers in their building for fire emergency safety.
Fire extinguisher personnel Donald Ochieng speaking at fire extinguisher usage forum at Joventure hotel challenged owners of various buildings to buy extinguisher and placed them at noticeable places for first action time of emergency.
“A great number of the locals are not conversant with the usage of fire extinguishers and the county government should create more forums in instilling awareness to locals,” said Ochieng.
According to the expert, fire extinguisher is effective in stopping small fires that erupt to huge fires when not contained.
“We need to educate locals to have knowledge on fire extinguisher usage in times of emergency, it is therefore a challenge to the leaders to convene such forums. Besides strict regulation should be enacted that insists that all buildings must have hand fire extinguishers,” he said.
Her counterpart Beatrice Njoki also made the same sentiments emphasising on fire extinguisher usage and education to the locals.
She noted that such emergency related education should be taken seriously by both locals and leaders.
