Speaking to a local daily on Saturday, Mutua said he was shocked to realize that some of the officers in his government have investments in different parts of the country yet they earn little salaries from their jobs.

He called for speedy investigations and aurdit of their lifestyles to determine source of their wealth.

“You find that somebody earns a salary of Sh50,000 yet they have three matatus in town and an apartment block. Where are they getting the money from if it not from the county or bribes? They cannot show a loan or how they got the money,” Mutua said.

Mutua said bribery has become part of Kenyans' lives.

He said citizens are forced to bribe in order to get services including protection from police.

“People have to bribe to even get service from the police; people have to bribe to get a tender. And that is passed on to wananchi. That is why we’ve got massive theft and massive poverty,” Mutua said.

The governor has backed President Uhuru Kenyatta's call forthe audit of all senior government officials.
