Two people were burnt to death when fire broke out in Kayole Estate.

The Monday night tragedy claimed the lives of a 25 year-old woman and her child.

Witnesses said the fire started from the affected house before it spread fast to other nearby houses.

Kayole police boss Joseph Gichangi said that local residents suspect the fire was caused by a gas leak.

"Some locals said they had smelt gas or there was a burst from it. We suspect it caused the fire but the investigations are ongoing," Gichangi told The Standard.

The two badly burnt bodies, which were found after residents took hours to fight the inferno, were taken to mortuary by police.

The tragedy comes after another fire destroyed several structures, including a school, in Kibera slums on Sunday.

Fire cases are on the rise in the city, with little or no response from fire marshalls, who are under the Nairobi City County government.
