A woman who abandoned her seven-months-old baby at night to go drinking will spend three years in jail, a Gatundu court has ordered. Gatundu Senior Resident Magistrate Mr. John Njuguna described Jacqueline Mumbi Kariuki’s behaviour as inhuman, shameless and unreasonable. Mumbi was convicted of abandoning her parental responsibilities after leaving her son on April 3 at Kamwangi town, Kiambu County, thereby subjecting the minor to unnecessary suffering. The prosecution told the court that on that day, Mumbi left her baby alone in the house and went on an overnight drinking spree. Neighbours got concerned and alerted police officers at Kamwangi because Mumbi had the habit of leaving the baby alone in the house almost every day. She was arrested on May 11, when when she came back to the house from drinking. In mitigation, Mumbi told the court that she is poor and sick and is not in a position to care for her baby boy. The magistrate considered her mitigation but noted her habitual behaviour of drinking and abandoning her children could not go unpunished.
