A mother and her triplets born prematurely are being detained at Mombasa hospital over a Sh2 million hospital bill.

37-year-old said the bill went up because the babies were kept in the incubator since July for a whole month after being born prematurely.

Currently, the babies Esther, Patience, and Samuel are at Pandya Hospital as their poor parents cannot afford the bill.

According to a nurse at the hospital, the four will only be released after paying the bill.

"Masara has been in our hospital since June and at the moment the hospital cannot discharge her and the babies until she clears her bill," nurse Victoria Mshai said.

According to the mother, the family has been praying for a baby for over a decade.

"I have been praying for over 10 years for God to bless me with a baby. Now that He has blessed me with three – one boy and two girls –, it looks funny that I cannot leave the hospital to enjoy motherhood," said Masara.

"I had a small business, but after scanning, the doctor advised me to take a rest and avoid doing any kind of work for the sake of my health and the babies. I was delighted to learn that I was carrying triplets and could not wait to hold them in my hands," Masara added.

The family is appealing to any well-wisher to help clear the bill.
