Members of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly on Tuesday voted to revert back to the committee level a motion that sought to urge the county government to develop a policy that that would identify, address and provide a permanent solution to the boda boda sector problems in the county.
Nominated MCA Mary Goreti had moved the motion, noting that boda boda sector was a major source of employment to many youths in the county hence need for a policy to control, coordinate and manage the sector to enable it flourish inline with the counties economic blue print.
"Failure to do this will create societal and economic problems causing a unnecessary friction between the county and the sector," argued the MCA.
Leah Malot, also a nominated MCA seconded the motion saying with Eldoret town growing at a fast rate, there was need to put in place measures that will ensure the boda boda sector doesn't become a menace.
"This policy will help not only to decongest the town but also enable our youths make a living out of bodaboda business," Malot said.
Several MCAs had supported the motion before the Kaptagat MCA Jonathan Ng'etich informed the assembly that a Bill addressing similar matter was already before the Trade and Industrialization Committee.
"Instead of passing this policy, it could be better if we reverted it back to committee where there is a bill we can incorporate issues that have been raised by members while contributing to this motion," said Mr. Ng'etich.
Assembly's Majority Whip, who is also the Ng'enyilel MCA seconded the motion which was overwhelmingly supported by other MCAs present.
