The Uasin Gishu county assembly has passed a motion to ban the sale of food on roadsides as well as in food joints that are located in 'dirty' areas.
The county assembly's majority leader, Josphat Lowoi, who tabled the motion in the House, said that the move is to prevent cases of cholera that have hit other Nakuru and Migori counties.
"Prevention is always better than cure. Reported cases of cholera in other counties raised a red flag here and we had to do something. We are not targeting any particular kind of businesses and ours is only to keep people safe," Lowoi told journalists after the motion was passed.
At the same time, Patrick Bundotich, the chair of the assembly's committee on health asked the county government to educate the public on proper hygiene.
"We want the county ministry of health to educate the public on good hygiene because we know cholera is caused by eating dirty food and drinking contaminated water," said Bundotich.
Soi ward MCA Isaac Chirchir asked the county government to ban stray pigs which he said are also capable of spreading the deadly disease.
