An old man has lost his life after he was attacked by thugs allegedly identified as motorists in Thika sub-county’s Kiandut market when he was on his way home.
The man, who sells old metallic items, is said to have been coming from the market after the sale and was attacked at the open air market centre where the daily activities were taking place.
According to a witness, a motorist carrying a huge metal rod hit the old man on the forehead, making him to fall down and die instantly.
“The three gang motorists were sitted there waiting for him and they had blunt weapons,” said a witness who requested to remain anonymous.
“When he neared them, one woke up and met him and hit his forehead so hard that he died immediately,” the witness added.
The man has been selling old scrap metals in the area but no one seemed to identify him as even one metal buyer said he just called him Kimani. He admitted not knowing his exact names.
Thika town police boss Shadrack Maithya, while confirming the incident, condemned the motorist who murdered the man, saying that the residents should have helped the deceased when he was attacked.
“I don't understand how you come together to fight crime yet you are the same people attacking the people they secure,” said Maithya.
"How can we live in a place where a man is murdered in front of everyone and you cannot help?
“You stare at a murderer killing innocent Kenyans and you can't even call the police?” he posed.
The body of the deceased was not immediately taken away as the police were trying to contain residents protesting over insecurity in the area.
