Motorists in Nakuru town want the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to do away with the railway roundabout at Gate house along the Nakuru- Eldoret highway.
The motorists say this is one way of dealing with the persistent traffic jam being witnessed at the main entry into Nakuru town.
Hesbon Cheboi, a motorist and Nakuru town resident, said that the roundabout is the major cause of the huge traffic jam being witnessed along the highway all day long.
He said confusion among motorists at the roundabout can only be solved by eliminating the roundabout and crating alternating lanes.
“The big lorries, buses and trailers coming from Nairobi should have a separate lane while matatus and private motorists entering town should have a separate lane as well and this can only be done if the roundabout is removed. The roundabout is the major cause of this problem,” said Cheboi.
Timothy Wamaitha, a matatu driver said the roundabout is hurting the economy of Nakuru town and supported its elimination.
“People are wasting a lot of time at this roundabout and the problem gets worse when the police arrive. Before they can complete the bypass let them first remove this roundabout to ease traffic in Nakuru. Nakuru is a very small town which should not be experiencing traffic jams but as long as this roundabout is still here things will remain the same,” said Wamaitha.
Majority of Nakuru residents especially those using the main highway have been complaining about the amount of time they spent in traffic jams especially during mid-morning and evening hours.
