Having unknowingly fallen for the tricks of con men who pose as mechanics, a victim of the broad daylight swindling has written to warn fellow motorists against being tricked by the very mechanics who act good Samaritans along Kitui-Machakos road near the bus park.
The mechanics on the Machakos street allegedly behave like gentlemen and professionals. However, once one agrees to the car being serviced, they remove the tyre and then tell you that your bushes and thyroids require replacement as they are worn out.
“These mechanics have mastered the art of conning and will wave at you to stop indicating that your front tyre is loose. The moment you stop, they will quickly remove the tyre so as to convince you to have it checked,” said the victim.
Having found their good sides with the spare parts dealers in the area, the mechanics direct you to them for you to buy the spares at the original cost. When you get to your car, they get the old parts back in place and keep the new ones to be returned to the shops later at a subsidised price.
The most affected motorists are ladies who have little or absolutely no idea about cars thus end up buying spares for about Sh10 000 and still part with an extra Sh 3000 for labour only to have their old parts returned in place.
The victim's message has gone viral on social media and especially on Whatsapp warning other motorists not to fall preys of the cartel as the police sit back and watch.
