Speaking to HiviSasa.com on Friday, the angry commuters also blamed the Energy Regulatory Commission for allegedly failing to give credible information with regard to transport system when announcing the latest price of oil in the market.

According to them, the recent increase of petrol and diesel has led to the mayhem with matatu operators allegedly taking advantage to increase the fares by up to Sh50.

“Something is not right in the transport industry. The matatu operators are the most corrupt and immune people in this nation. They have their own rates which they charge when they want without necessarily following the price of oil in market,” said Francis Moochi.

“For instance in normal circumstances, taking a matatu from Kisii to Chepilat township costs around Sh80 but at the moment they are asking up to Sh130. The ERC and the Ministry of Transport should look for effective ways of dealing with these people,” added Ms Irene Sese, a regular commuter.

However, a group of motorists interviewed denied the claims and instead backed the commuters to have those tarnishing the reputation of matatu industry face the law.

“I am not happy with this negative perception about us. Some of us are disciplined and we normally follow the law. It is important for the government to deal with those hiking the fare without following due process,” said Alex Nyamboki, who works for Zoin Company.
