Several motorists and passengers travelling to Nairobi were caught up in a traffic snarl up in Gilgil on the Nakuru-Nairobi highway on Monday.
The snarl-up was necessitated by the high number of people travelling back to the city after the extended Labour Day holiday as well as reopening of schools.
"I arrived here at 2pm and I was shocked to find the jam, its now 5pm and I have barely moved 100 metres," said Francis Sije.
"We expected this, it is usually the situation during holidays such as Easter and Christmas. I am afraid this traffic will cost our business. I was supposed to have arrived in Nairobi and returning back," said Samuel Mwaura a matatu driver.
Motorists said the overlapping had worsened the jam.
"There were no police to stop the overlapping which has worsened the situation," he added.
The traffic police arrived late to contain the mess.
