Many road users spent their night on Mombasa road on Sunday evening following an accident involving two trailers near Daystar University and Prima Rosa farm completely blocking the road.
The Trailers involved in the accident were not cleared until Monday morning due to lack of cranes. The traffic jam spread from Embakasi to Daystar University, a distance of 36 km.
Nairobi deputy police commander Moses Ombati said that the police lack cranes to deal with heavy commercial vehicles.
“We rely on private cranes and it took time to put the owner of the trailer and the owner of the crane in touch and agree on the price. During some occurrences we have been billed after engaging the crane owner as the police,” said Ombati.
According to Machakos County Commander Gedion Amalla, the traffic worsened after motorists overlapped to avoid the two trailers. He added that some trucks got stuck while overlapping hence blocking the road.
“We managed to clear the road at 1:00am, but we were called back at 5.00am due to heavy traffic in the same section,” said Amalla. He added that the officers managed to clear the mayhem at around 9:00am on Monday.
