The operators say they are always forced to take extra precaution since some motorists do not care at all about road rules, pointing out over-speeding and dangerous overtaking as some of the common behaviours among the motorists.

“The operators are never patient and have a habit of rushing, risking their lives and that of their customers. A number of times I have to apply emergency breaks to prevent a disaster from happening,” says Isack Tumbo, a driver.

They also called upon the traffic police officers to crack down on rogue operators.

“You will always know an experienced driver who has completed the full course and a learner or joker on the road. Some operators are joking with their lives. You find an operator speeding with a customer with no protective gears, which is dangerous," said Hosea Oino, a driver.

“I once was forced to sway off the road and landed in a ditch trying to avoid hitting a motorist who had abruptly entered the road without looking out for oncoming vehicles. Luckily there were no casualties,” added Ongwae.

They are now calling upon the operators to maintain road safety rules for their mutual benefit.

One of the motorists plying the route denied the claims saying PSV operators did not respect the operators and expected them to get out of the road or create more space for them at the expense of their safety.

“The PSV operators are the problem. I don’t understand where they expect us to ride in. You find them speeding and hooting us out of the road," said Moses Onyanche, a motorist.
