Speaking at the scene on Monday in relation to an accident that took place there last weekend and injured several passengers, the riders said that the place has now become a blackspot claiming tens of lives.

"Both the national and the Kiambu County Government have a responsbility of ensuring that more accidents do not take place here in future," said Peter Murigi, Chairman Bluepost Bodaboda Riders.

He added: "The endless jam near the bridge is mainly to blame for the accidents as vehicles are always stuck close to each other and an impact on one of them affects several others leading to several injuries or casualties."

Samuel Karanu, a rider said that many times the injured are left at their mercy before any emergency response arrives at the scene.

"We are always the first to witness the accidents as they happen and we are the ones who mostly call for emergency help from the Police or ambulance services. At other times we are the ones who rush the injured to nearby hospitals," Karanu said.

Motorists too want the bridge expanded.

"We not only suffer from accidents at this bridge, we also waste a lot of time in traffic and an expansion of this bridge would mean a lot to us motorists," Jacob Muthii, a matatu driver said.
