Lamu Women Representative Shakila Abdalla and activists have appealed to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) to intervene and help stop the construction of the proposed Sh200 billion coal plant in the county.

Abdalla and the activists who spoke in Lamu on Tuesday said the project is not good for the region in many aspects.

“The project will do a lot of damage, not just to our health and environment but also to the culture and heritage of this place. If this happens, Lamu will be banished from being a world heritage site,” said Abdalla as reported by The Star.

The organisation, in 2001, listed Lamu Old Town as a World Heritage Site in recognition of its unique cultural value.
