Kitui South MP Rachel Nyamai has urged the national government to supply more relief food to residents who are facing starvation in the area.

According to the legislator, residents living in Kyatune, Mutha, Ikutha, Kanziko and Mutomo are in dire need of food and water as the ravaging drought continues to bite.

Nyamai says that most locals facing starvation in the area have been relying on supplies from well-wishers and the county government which she said is not enough.

The Kitui South lawmaker says that locals have now resulted to eating herbs and wild fruits to survive.

“I am appealing to the national government to distribute more relief food to locals facing hunger and starvation in Kitui and other parts of the country experiencing drought,” she said during an interview with journalists at Mutomo Town on Wednesday.

The MP observed that women and children are malnourished adding that the situation could get out of hand if there will be no urgent intervention.

Kitui is among the 13 counties worst hit by the ravaging drought across the country.

Others are Garissa, Isiolo, Wajir, Marsabit, Samburu, Turkana, Baringo, Tana River, Kwale, Kilifi, Taita Taveta and Lamu.

The national government has since declared ravaging drought a national disaster and promised to double relief food distribution in worst hit areas.
