The MP claimed the officers had been extorting money from matatu drivers and bodaboda operators even when they have committed no traffic offense.

The legislator said he had received many complaints by motorists that that public transport business had become increasingly too expensive to venture in due to the unbecoming conduct of traffic officers who have been demanding unrealistic bribes.

The MP vowed he would take undisclosed action against officers who have been adversely mentioned in extortion and bribe-taking cartels.

“It is wrong when a police officer who enjoys a monthly salary from the government goes to the extent of extorting innocent hustlers who are toiling to make ends meet. We will take stern action against those who continue to perpetrate this vice in Matungulu,” said Mule.

The MP spoke in Tala after flagging off road safety training courses for 480 bodaboda operators where 56 of them were enrolled to a driving course at a cost of sh 500,000.

At the same time, Mule urged the bodaboda operators to ensure compliance to road safety regulations in order to prevent road fatalities. “It is also regrettable to have lost very many lives through road carnage involving motorbikes and we urge all road users to be extremely careful while on the road,” said Mule.

On Wiper party primaries scheduled for next month, the MP urged residents to observe peace during the nominations exercise. “We want all voters to observe peace and respect for one another as we enter the crucial season of nominations and later in the general elections,” he said.
