Parents in Mombasa County have been urged to take their parental responsibilities seriously as more children in the county are engaging in criminal activities.
Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi who criticized the parents for failing to monitor their children, said youth at the Coast are being lured into joining criminal gangs.
Mwinyi cautioned parents against evading their responsibilities, saying the move compromises the well-being of the children.
Speaking in Mombasa, the MP noted that some parents are leaving their parental responsibilities to teachers, saying children cannot receive proper care from teachers alone.
“Parents have failed to guide their children allowing criminal gangs to lure them into their groups. Most of the children are being recruited into criminal gangs in the area since they are not in school,” said Mwinyi.
At same time, Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa has asked parents to take full responsibilities of their children.
Marwa warned the youth to keep off criminal activities saying security personel in the region will take action against anyone who breaks the law.
He issued a stern warning to criminal gangs such as Wakali Kwanza and Wakali Wao whch have been terrorizing residents in the region, and urged residents to work with police to ensure members of the gangs are arrested.
“Let parents take their responsibilities seriously because you will never fight a legitimate government. Tell the criminal gangs to disarm themselves or they face arrest,” he said.
