Kisumu West MP John Olago Aluoch has lauded the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission for the wise ruling that found no justification to remove Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula from the voters list.
Mr Olago said the IEBC has set a strong precedent on which all future similar issues must be based before the electoral reforms are aligned.
Olago said the law is silent on what procedure to be used to strike off one’s name from the register if found guilty of violence or bribery.
The Ford Kenya MP said he sits in the justice and legal affairs committee in Parliament and they have plans to set up the procedure.
“As a committee we had sat down with IEBC earlier and talked about the issues of Wetangula. We told IEBC that there was no law that supports striking out of a voter’s name from the register. I am happy the Commission has applied that,” he said.
Addressing the press in Kisumu on Wednesday, Olago said once Parliament resumes from the long recess the committee will embark on working on the electoral law reforms.
“Electoral law reforms that we are going to deal with when we resume Parliament, we must make it clear of the procedure to be adopted where the election court recommends that the voter be removed from the voter’s register,” he said.
The legislator said opponents of Cord took advantage of the mishap in the law to victimise Wetangula.
“It is a pity that those who are political opponents of Cord took advantage of that lacuna in the law to victimise Wetangula, they knew what they were doing was wrong. I am happy IEBC has made it clear,” he said.
