A Member of Parliament has called for installation of CCTV cameras in order to curb the escalating road accidents.

Ndia legislator George Kariuki said the cameras will capture speeding motorists and those who flout other traffic rules that have been blamed for rising road carnage, Saturday Standard reports.

The MP said this would also reduce contact between traffic police officers and motorists that is blamed for corruption through bribery.

"Once a motorist is captured on camera speeding, the data is relayed to a central control point for processing and imposition of fines on registered vehicle owners," he said, as quoted by the paper.

Kariuki spoke at Kiandangae village in Ndia when he distributed 200 water tanks to Karangiri self-help group on Friday.

Kariuki's remarks come at a time road accidents are reported on almost daily basis.

More than 180 lives have been lost in the month of December alone, according to the statistics by National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

The agency has blamed human errors such as speeding, reckless driving, fatigue, drunk driving, among others to the increasing road accidents.

"We have increased our presence in most roads which we believe will go a long way in helping us improve efficiency. Drivers should henceforth be more cautious on roads.

"But most importantly we would like to appeal to all road users to be careful and remain vigilant, especially passengers, because they are the ones in charge," said NTSA Director-General Francis Meja recently.
