Speaking to the press in Garissa town, Shidiye led other local leaders in making the concerted call, also urging the national government to declare the drought situation a national disaster.

The politician's sentiments were also echoed by speaker of the Garissa County Assembly Mohamed Abey, who further called upon the people of North Eastern to come up with localized mitigation measures to avert the situation in the coming days.

Abey added that the county assembly was working on a budget to help the residents out of the witnessed predicament.

Since the drought situation started close to two months ago, residents have been trekking for several kilometers to get water.

Similarly, livestock have been affected as the few watering points have run dry.

To date, at least seven people have died due to the drought, with the latest being a boy who was killed in a fight at a water point.
