Kiambu Women Representative Gathoni Wa Muchomba has cautioned youth against betting.
Wa Muchomba said that the trend by young people spending their hard-earned money on betting is worrying.Speaking in Kiambu Town on Sunday, the MP said that the ongoing World Cup has confused young men who are spending day and night betting.She said that betting has become a serious social disorder that continues to affect individuals, families and the society at large.She said that majority of young men have neglected their families in terms of responsibilities in the name of betting.“This thing (betting) has become serious and we ask young people to stop it and concentrate on their individual growth and their families,” she said.Wa Muchomba said that young people are enriching betting companies at the expense of investing in meaningful projects. She described betting a serious disease that needs urgent treatment.The woman rep noted that some youth are going to the extent of harming and even killing themselves after losing money to betting firms.She called for serious regulations to be imposed on the betting sector in order to rescue young people.Betting has been spiced up with the World Cup that is currently underway in Russia. Several people have confessed losing huge amounts of money in the recent world cup matches after wrongly predicting for their favourite teams.However, there are young people and sports fanatics who are making a 'kill' by making correct predictions.The one month long World Cup bonanza that kicked off on Thursday, last week, ends on July 15.
