The programme seeks to reach several other institutions from next week, and is powered by the National Government Affirmative Action Fund, and will be accompanied by motivational talks.

Speaking during the event, Chae urged teachers to target only girls from needy backgrounds while calling for transparency in the exercise.

“I am pleased to launch this programme because it helps the girl-child be constituent in terms of attending classes during the menstrual period. Also, I had to give boys from needy backgrounds underwear because it’s a  two way traffic,” she said.

“It’s my request to teachers from schools that have been selected to ensure transparency so that only the deserving cases access the donation,” she said on Thursday at Getengeririe Primary School.

Mrs Chae also seized the opportunity to educate area residents on the role woman representative citing frustrations they went through in the initial stages in the National Parliament.

“We are the first women representatives and the constitution had not exhaustively outlined our roles. At some time, we were called flower girls but I am happy we have fought and gotten a kitty from which we will use to empower the community,” she said.
