Mt Elgon MP Fred Kapondi has denied claims that he is the chief financier of a militia group causing mayhem in parts Mt Elgon sub county in Bungoma County.
According to Kapondi, the claims are being peddled by local NGOs based in Bungoma who want to paint a picture that the area is so insecure so that they (NGOs) call for peace meetings.
Kapondi made the remarks in Cheptais town when he toured the area to assess he security situation after the government through Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i imposed a 90-day curfew in the area to curb insecurity.
"There are NGOs running around calling for peace meetings in Mt Elgon. Peace meetings for what? Who is fighting who?" Kapondi posed.
"There is no conflict in Mt Elgon. Those causing trouble are thugs who we will deal with. That I am the one funding militia. Ca they prove that?"
The lawmaker also denied rumours that the militia group said to be financed by his is fighting another group funded by former MP John Serut who he defeated during the August poll.
Mt Elgon sub county has of recent witnessed insecurity incidents and more that ten people have been killed in the clashed said to be fueled by land conflicts.
