Ijara MP elect Sophia Abdi Noor has vowed to fight for inclusion of women in the Garissa county administration.
Addressing residents in Ijara Town on Thursday, the MP elect said that she will not seat and watch women being left out of government as it has been the norm with previous government.
She said that women have every right to be included and engaged in governance affairs.
She asked Garissa governor Ali Korane’s government to give women, youth and Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWDs) priority in county employment positions.
“I have talked to governor Korane and urged him not to abandon women in his leadership,” she said as quoted by the Daily Nation.
The MP elect said that women in North Eastern region have been sidelined on matters leadership. She said that the constitution gives women a voice adding that she will speak out for them.
“I am not going to parliament to sleep or relax rather I am going there to fight hard for women rights,” she added.
The Ijara lawmaker asked women to be steadfast and apply for government positions once they are advised.
She also urged women not to be intimidated and come out boldly to press for the political interests. Noor blamed some outdated cultural practices which she said have seen women shy away from leadership.
Noor is the first woman to be elected MP in the larger Northern Eastern region.
She defeated veteran politician Ibrahim Abass to clinch the MP seat on Party of Reforms and Development (PDR) in the recently concluded general election.
