Nyando Member of Parliament Jared Okello has reiterated that the anti-IEBC demonstrations by the National Super Alliance (NASA) are not being held for fun.
According to Okello, the demonstrations are meant to bring changes to the country's electoral system that has been marred by malpractices for far too long. In his view, the cost of democracy is huge and that is why the economy is suffering at the moment.
The legislator also demystified the idea that fires lit during demonstrations necessarily mean there is violence. He believes that the fires are a form communication during the demos.
"NASA is not holding demonstrations just for fun. They are supposed to bring an end to the electoral malpractices in the country. The demonstrations have affected the economy but it should be known that the cost of democracy is huge. Furthermore, the fires lit during demos do not translate to violence. The fires are a form communication during the demos," reiterated Okello.
The Mp also dismissed the idea that NASA flag-bearer Raila Odinga ditched the country during this precarious political period. Okello clarified that Raila is in the UK due to an invitation to give a lecture about democracy and nothing else.
"Similarly, it should be known that Raila Odinga has not ditched the country at this important time but is in the UK due to an invitation from his hosts to lecture on issues of democracy," added Okello.
The Mp made the remarks during a political discussion on Friday on KTN News TV.
