Yatta MP Francis Mwangangi has hit out at some politicians and activists opposing the nomination of Justice Philomena Mwilu as the next Deputy Chief Justice (DCJ).
The MP says that those opposing Mwilu's nomination are playing politics.
Mwangangi claims that some forces within the political circles are not happy with Mwilu’s nomination as DCJ.
The Yatta lawmaker hit out at his Kandara counterpart Alice Wahome for opposing Mwilu’s nomination.
“People should keep politics out of Mwilu’s nomination as Deputy Chief Justice,” he said on Tuesday at Parliament buildings in Nairobi.
Mwangangi defended the DCJ nominee saying that she has the required qualifications and principles to deputize Chief Justice David Maraga.
The Yatta lawmaker added that Mwilu is a defender of human rights and more so women rights.
Kandara MP filed a petition against Mwilu alleging that the judge is incompetent and corrupt. The MP further claimed the Mwilu demanded a bribe in an election petition case she had filed in 2008.
The Kandara lawmaker claimed that Mwilu is not fit to deputize Maraga and that the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) should nominate another candidate.
Mwilu who was on Tuesday vetted by the National Assembly Justice and Legal Affairs Committee for the position defended herself against the allegations. She defended her integrity stating that she has rose through the judicial ranks because she is a strong woman.
The Justice and Legal Affairs Committee will later this week debate the report on the nominee in Parliament.
