[Photo/ Mohammed Ali/ facebook.com]An MP has intervened in a case where Nakumatt supermarket employees are demanding unpaid salaries running into months.Nyali MP Mohammed Ali has accused the retail chain of violating labour regulations and promised to pursue the matter and ensure the embattled supermarket’s workers receive their pay.A section of Nakumatt Supermarket employees on Thursday downed their tools to protest delayed salaries for over six months as the retailer continues to struggle with debts.Nakumatt is said to have paid the workers only 30 percent of their June salaries and failed to update their deductions with the workers’ social and pension schemes.“Today (Thursday) my office received Nakumatt Cinemax staff who complained of several Human Resources related grievances; six months unpaid salary, non-remittance to SACCO, National Social Security Fund, National Hospital Insurance Fund, unnecessary compulsory leaves and unlawful dismissal of workers,” Ali said.“This is against the International Labour Organisation standards and employment act of 2007. I will make up a follow up with the employer so that justice to the workers can be served. If it doesn't succeed, I will exhaust the Parliament and Labour Tribunal Court as other options. I won't rest until justice is served,” he added.About 100 Nakumatt workers in Nairobi held a demonstration along Kimathi Street and City Hall Way Thursday to press for their pay even as the retailer is currently pursuing a rescue plan with Tuskys.They represented workers from various departments including supervisors, shop assistants, marketing, and cashiers.
