The MP on Wednesday sent a team to empty filled toilets in Kiandutu slums, which are believed to be one of the contributing factors to the spread of cholera in the region.

Speaking in Kiandutu, Wainaina said he is committed to maintaining a clean environment, in a bid to cushion residents from infectious diseases that associated with dirty environments.

“I will not sit and watch as my people contract diseases associated with a dirty environment. Filled toilets will be emptied and cleaned to ensure residents live in a clean environment,” he said.

The lawmaker said landlords should ensure tenants have access to clean toilets to avoid an outbreak of diseases.

“Rental house owners should construct good toilets for tenants, failure to which the health department from the county will force the tenants to vacate houses without good and well-maintained toilets,” added the MP.

He asked residents in the area to visit health centers in the region to be screened for various diseases so as to receive proper treatment and avoid unnecessary deaths.

Residents in the area lauded the MP for emptying the toilets, noting that he always responds to their calls by offering solutions to the different challenges they face.

“After the cholera outbreak was reported in the area, Mr Wainaina has been with us and promised to do everything possible to ensure we curb the spread of the disease. Emptying toilets was a good initiative by the MP as the move will ensure residents in the slums do not contract the disease,” said Milton Kamau.

Bernard Ondimu, a public health officer in the region urged locals to treat drinking water and visit health centers whenever they notice any symptoms of cholera, to receive early treatment.
