Kajiado East Member of Parliament Peris Tobiko has lauded steps made towards empowering women and championing for the rights of the girl-child.
Speaking while officiating the 10th Annual Gender Awareness Day at Egerton University in Njoro on Friday, Tobiko observed that the new constitution had put in place provisions that ensure women and the girl-child’s welfare and rights are safeguarded.
She further added, hitherto vulnerable and abused by society, women and the girl- child in Kenya were now enjoying equal rights and opportunities that promise to up lift their living standards.
“I beg to observe that the Kenyan society has recognized the values of women and the girl-child in society and that is why the government and stakeholders are putting a lot of emphasis and attention to their rights and privileges equal to men and the boy- child,” said the Tobiko.
Tobiko also congratulated the Gender and Women Development institution of the University for its diverse efforts that were uplifting the standards of women and the girl child in the country, including education bursaries and awareness programmes.
