There were protests on Thursday in Nyali after residents accused a local businessman of grabbing a section of a cemetery land in the area.
Local rights activist Mwadime Kisaka led the protestors in denouncing the businessman who he claimed possessed a fake title deed claiming he had bought the piece of land from the county government.Mwadime said the land where the Makaburini cemetery is located was public property and claims of ownership of the land by the businessman were false. The protestors said attempts to grab the land they know has since time immemorial been used for “resting” their kin will not succeed.“He has been coming here at night,” Mwadime said.“If he is sure he is the rightful owner of the land why doesn’t he come at day time?”“We are aware of his machinations and we know all the people he deals with. We will not allow this land to be grabbed.”The Thursday demos were the second to be held in less than a month following similar protest three weeks ago.Residents claim the man whose identity remains concealed is conniving with corrupt officials from the National Lands Commission to grab the land.Mwadime said records at the Mombasa Lands department indicate the contested piece of land is public property.Nyali MP Hezron Awiti who joined the protesters said he won’t allow public property to be taken away.“This is the third time he is coming here,” Awiti said of the businessman.“I have already verified records at the county government. The Makaburibi land is a graveyard and not an individual’s property.”
