Ugunja Member of Parliament Opiyo Wandayi has linked the Gikomba fire to poor planning and neglect of the informal sector by the government.
According to the MP, the stalls were crowded and poorly structured facilitating constant recurrence of fires at the market.
He however absolved the Nairobi county government from blame in regards to the constant fires at the market. He believes the county government has been in existence for a short while and thus could not do much in averting the fires.
"The constant fires at Gikomba market are as a result of poor planning and neglect of the informal sector. The county government should not be apportioned blame for the fires since they have been existence for a short while now," reiterated Wandayi.
Wandayi further dismissed any hopes of investigation yielding fruit in Friday's fire incident in the market. He believes the poor structuring of the market will be a hindrance to any investigation.
"With such poor planning of the market there is no way an investigation can be conducted. Where does one even start from in case an investigation is to be held?" posed Wandayi.
The legislator made the remarks on Friday during a political discussion on Citizen Extra on Citizen TV.
