Thika Town MP Patrick Wainaina has called on the government and the private sector to intervene and create more employment opportunities for the youth in the area.
Speaking in Thika on Tuesday, the MP noted that it is unfortunate that majority of residents in the constituency are struggling with poverty due to lack of jobs.
"The government and private companies especially those operating within Thika should consider giving more jobs to locals from my area to alleviate poverty from the society," he noted.
The MP promised to champion for education in a bid to ensure that youth who have graduated from different universities and colleges get jobs that will enable them to provide for their families.
He further noted that the move will help in reducing the number of young people engaging in crime.
"The high levels of poverty witnessed in the area are due to lack of education among our youths. I will ensure more youths from the constituency get proper education for a better future and secure job opportunities for youths who have completed school to reduce the number of idlers within Thika Town constituency," he said.
Wainaina also promised to help locals set up small businesses so as to increase their monthly earnings.
He challenged his constituents to form groups and apply for government loans that will see them set up businesses in the region.
