Lari MP Mburu Kahangara has asked the national government to take action against teachers who do not go to school regularly as required by law.

Speaking at Wangware Primary School in Kagwe, Lari constituency on Friday, Kahangara said action ought to be taken against lazy teachers.

The MP lamented that education standards in the area were drastically going down adding that students performance in national examination is also poor.

“The government should act tough on teachers who neglect their duties causing students to fail in national examinations,” said Mr Kahangara.

The Lari lawmaker observed that education standards will improve if teachers stay in class.

He alleged that some of the teachers have side jobs and spend less time with their students.

Kahangara said he will work with education officials to ensure performance is improved.

At the same time, the MP urged parents with needy but bright students to apply for bursaries to enable their children continue with their education.

The MP indicated that needy but bright students will be sponsored through the Constituency Development Fund.

While releasing the 2015 KCPE results two weeks ago, Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i raised concerns over teacher absenteeism in public schools.

The CS claimed that 70 per cent of teachers in public schools miss class without proper reasons a move he said has led to poor performance in public schools.
