Most of the girls from Katani Secondary School in Athi River District drop out of school due to unwanted pregnancies, thereby compromising their education.
This was disclosed by the school's head teacher, Damaris Musila, who attributed the situation to the community's environment that she said was not conducive for learning, more so to the girl child.
“We have had most of the girls from Katani Secondary School dropout due to unwanted pregnancies hence compromising their education," said Musila.
Musila said a number of the girls were lured into illicit sex by workers of many quarries spread all over the area, who offered them petty cash and cheap goodies hence impregnating them.
She disclosed that the girls were interrupted by truck drivers and quarry dealers along their way either to or from school.
The head teacher said the culprits take advantage of long distances between the children homes' and the school, that make them leave their residences as early as 6am daily for school and return after 5pm in the evening.
Musila called on the Mavoko MP to consider constructing a student's dormitory for the girls, to curb the challenge and prevent more incidences of pregnancies among the girls.
The area MP, Patrick Makau condemned the act and passed stern warning to the perpetrators, arguing it was hooliganism and inhuman and cannot not be tolerated.
Makau called on the provincial administrators, especially chiefs to be more vigilant and arrest the culprits.
The two were speaking during the MP's visit to the school on Monday, when he commissioned a class room constructed with CDF funds.
Makau, who promised to construct a girls' dormitory in the next financial year also donated 50 lockers for students, staff chairs, football, football uniforms for the school team and Sh35,000 in cash to connect the school with electricity.
