All factors considered, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission should prepare for a presidential runoff next year, a legislature from Nakuru has said.
According to Njoro member of Parliament Joseph Kiuna, the number of registered voters as per the IEBC records are not enough to ensure a presidential candidate wins in the first round.
Speaking in his Njoro backyard on Tuesday, Kiuna called on his constituents to turn out in large numbers during phase two of the voter registration to acquire the important document to save the country from wasting millions of taxpayers money in a second round.
He said other than investing in a runoff that can be avoided only if many voting age persons registered as voters, the funds can be channelled to other development projects that can improve on the livelihoods of the common mwananchi.
"As it is today, no candidate will manage to raise the 50 plus one which means that a runoff is inevitable," he said.
"This will be a total waste of time and resources because all of us have a chance of registering as voters to help the country from plunging into such a case," he added.
Kiuna, who also noted that President Uhuru Kenyatta will win the presidential seat in the first round, called on electoral body to fast track the second voter registration exercise to avoid speculations so that everybody can concentrate on developing the country.
In Nakuru County, Njoro was among the areas that recorded the least numbers in the just-concluded voter registration exercise which closed on March 15.
