Borabu MP Ben Momanyi has questioned the summoning of Cord three members over an alleged plot to overthrow President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government.
The three; Simba Arati (Dagoretti (North), George Aladwa (ODM Nairobi branch chair) and Mr Caroli Omondi (Raila Odinga’s former aide), were ordered to record statements Tuesday over the alleged plot to recruit militia from South Sudan so as to overthrow the government.
Mr Ben Momanyi on Tuesday rebuked the continued ‘harassment’ of Opposition leaders saying it was likely to raise tension ahead of the 2017 general election.
“I am opposed to the continuous summoning of leaders especially from the Opposition because it contributes to unnecessary tension in the country as we head to the 2017 polls. We don’t need harassment for the nation to thrive,” he said.
“For instance, saying that some leaders were recruiting militia from a neighbouring sovereign country to overthrow the government is a fallacy. Sometimes it’s really sad that we ignite political tensions which can throw our country into shambles,” added Mr Momanyi.
He also warned Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaiserry against subjecting the Opposition to discrimination by using police to intimidate them.
“The Interior CS is doing a good job but when it comes to handling of small political issues, he misuses our police by issuing unnecessary orders that are discriminatory. Police should at all times adhere to the rule of law by providing security rather than discriminating a certain political class,” he added.
He urged the police to drop the latest summoning of the three members.
“Summoning people all times sometimes puts the country in an unprecedented situation. Tension is all over and businesses cannot run normally. We need to be tolerant,” added the legislator.
