Nakuru East MP David Gikaria has accused the police in Nakuru over laxity to follow up on his increased attacks by members of the mungiki sect.
Gikaria said that he had reported six times to the police on the various instances where he had been assaulted by the members of the sect, yet the perpetrators walk freely.
“I have six OB and the people who attacked me are well known yet the police are reluctant to even arrest and charge them,”said Gikaria.
He was speaking during an exclusive interview on Tuesday where he pointed out that his life was under threat from the sect members as he had opposed the relocation of hawkers.
“I have personally raised the issue with Internal Security CS Joseph Nkaiserry and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett seeking to have them investigate the reemergence of the sect especially in Nakuru town. I am concerned that the security department is doing nothing to stem this people who will be a serious threat come 2017 general elections,”he added.
Gikaria pointed out that some politicians will be tempted to use the cult to gain political mileage due to their increased numbers.
“I'm worried since flamingo is one of the most affected areas when the gang comes to attack. In 2003 we lost 36 people after the cult members came on rampage. I feel that not enough attention is being given to the issue and they might end up harassing and intimidating more people, especially as the elections draw near,” he added.
