Area MP Dr James Nyikal said many families who lost their loved ones to wild animals are languishing in poverty.

Dr Nyikal said the compensation process is long and tedious leaving many families with little hope of getting help.

“When a family loses a member to wild animals, KWS should speedily give assistance. What they must know is that the amount they are giving will not bring back lives,” he said.

Speaking during a public forum at Asat beach along Lake Victoria basin on Monday, Nyikal lauded the newly formed compensation committee and urged them to offer quick financial assistance to the affected families.

He noted that the new committee should identify those who were attacked by wild animals and backdate the cases to three years to be able to expedite the payment process.

“It is good that a member of this committee is in this village, please help our people to get compensated, for those who have died and those with injuries,” he said.

The MP said KWS should take human-wildlife conflict seriously and not to pay much attention to the tourism aspect of it.

Residents of Seme living along the lake have been victims of crocodile attacks.

Many have been killed by the animal while others escaped with serious wounds.
