Kisumu East MP Shakeel Shabbir has dismissed calls for the formation of a committee to honour national heroes in the county. He said that the drive was a waste of taxpayers’ money and that the county government should shelve the idea. The committee was proposed by Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma, saying that they will be tasked with identifying and proposing individuals who are to be honoured as Kisumu heroes. Shabbir said that the county should instead just honour the heroes. “We all know who our heroes are here in Kisumu. Let us not form a committee to eat into our money yet we can just honour these people without going through that process,” he said. He suggested the formation of a Heroes corner at Kondele. “Start a Heroes corner at Kondele so that we can even honour the 67 people that died when they were shot at by presidential guards in 1969. We can use it to honour our other heroes here,” he said.
