Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir has ruled out any tribal agenda in their push for the secession of the Coast region.Nassir said the secession debate came about as a result of economic discrimination by the central government. He argued that Coast leaders felt they would not benefit in any way from the national government in the near future.Speaking in Mombasa on Wednesday, Nassir said the secession campaign is aimed at ensuring the Coast region benefits from its natural resources. The MP rubbished claims by a section of religious leaders and Jubilee politicians that the campaign cannot be implemented.“They should stop instilling fear into our political leaders and locals over the secession debate. We are very much on course and we will secede,” said Nassir.Nassir said Jubilee politicians in the region are only opposing the campaign to please their masters, arguing that they don’t have an agenda for Coast residents.“If we want to win this course then we should stand firm, most of our local people are fully behind us so there is no reason to panic,” added Nassir. He urged Coast politicians to engage residents in the debate, to make it easy to fight for their rights.Last week, Kilifi MCAs warned Muslim cleric and political activist Sheikh Juma Ngao against criticising Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi and his Mombasa counterpart Hassan Joho for pushing for secession.
